On 7 November last in the village of Baka within the Paikgacha upazila
in the Khulna district, the Rishi hamlet was mercilessly attacked by the
nearby and influential Hindu inhabitants of the Gosh hamlet. The reason
behind the attack was that a certain Bolonath Gosh had forbidden the
Rishi hamlet’s youth to play football in his field close to the Rishi
hamlet. The youth however obtaining permission to play from a difference
person went on playing. At this the owner of the land Mr. Bolonath and
a number of his people attacked indiscriminately the youth and their
village, destroying houses a beating up whoever came their way. 6 Rishi
people were admitted to Paikgacha health complex. Both Parittrran and
the Bangladesh Dalit Parishad are siding with the Rishi people who, from
the 7 of November on, are living in utter fear of retaliation. A case
(no. 07, dated 08/11/2014) has been filed with he thana of Paikgacha.

Report in Bangla

On November 16,

2010, at about 8 o’clock in the morning a group of circa 50 people on board of motorcycles attacked in medieval style a Dalit (Rishi) hamlet in the village of Mojidpur in Kesobpur upazila in the Jessore district. The attackers set fire to the houses of Sopon Das, Gopal Das, Shosti Das, Roshomoe Das, Shorosoti Das and Orciona Das. At the same time, they started breaking up and beating up whatever and whoever came their way. Apparently, behind the attack there is a question of land. The musclemen have been hired by local Muslims who have claims on the land of the Rishi. In the ensuing fight a dozen Rishi people had to be admitted to the local hospital for treatment. After the attack, people of the Rishi hamlet supported by other local people organised a procession to protest the happening. A memorandum has been handed over to the upazila’s administrative officer. To farther protest the attack a road blockade was enforced. The people were addressed by Advocate Abu Bokkar, local leader, and Bikash Das, convener of the Bangladesh Dalit Parishad. The latter organisation and Parittran, a Dalit Human Rights organisation, are planning further action for the following days. Court cases have been started and pressure is mounting for the arrest of the perpetrators.

Assault on a Rishi village

A particular of the assault on the Rishi para of Laksanpur/Ramnathpur.

On the 18th of May, 2010, in the Rishi para of Laksanpur/Ramnathpur village, Monirampur Upazila in the district of Jessore, a religious ceremony (namjoggo) was being celebrated. The festival was joined by many Hindus of the locality together with a few Muslim neighbours. Among them about 15 picked up a quarrel with local youngsters. The quarrel arose because these Muslim men wanted to get on the mary-go-round (that for the occasion had been set up there), with Rishi women. Being refused by local Rishi youth, an altercation followed with exchange of heavy words. The Muslim men eventually left the premises but came back soon after with other people. They created havoc in the Rishi para of Laksanpur/Ramnathpur beating whoever they happen to meet, not even respecting women whose dresses got torn away. At present, Poritosh Das, Laksmi Rani Das, Bilat Das and Kushum Das are under treatment in the Monirampur Hospital. On the same evening Jibon Das, on behalf of the Rishi para, lodged an official complain with the local police station (18/112). Soon after, the police arrested one of the culprits. The villagers of Laksanpur/Ramnathpur are passing their days in fear, hoping for a just solution to the question.
